the Magna Carta in the 21st century church

I was recently forwarded a link that I was immediately drawn to. I’ve read books by both Len Sweet and Frank Viola and was really interested to see what these to were going to collaborate on. And the Title? That was an instant grab – A Magna Carta for Restoring the Supremacy of Jesus Christ. Wow? That’s pretty huge.

It took me a couple days to actually read the thing, which I did today, and I wasn’t disappointed in any way. Len and Frank are obviously no longer content with the watering down of the person of Jesus that so often happens in our western culture christianity. They even say at one point that they “feel an massive disconnection in the church today”. This disconnection is directly the result of a church that they feel follows Jesus’ teachings but not necessarily Jesus.

The “manifesto” is both troubling and freeing at the same time. It feels somewhat rough on the church establishment (a common gripe I have with one of the authors) but, that being said, it may very well be warranted. The article is freeing in that it feels like a permission giving article – kinda like, here is what we’ve been waiting to hear now we can do it.

As most who know me would attest, I have a passion for the person and work of Christ. If you’ve heard my story, you know I’m in love with Him and with His bride and I’ve given my whole story to serve them both. This manifesto, for me, is a declaration and call to move deeper into this Jesus and this love.

I’ve read some comments about it and as usual there is the usual poo-pooing of good thought, but my hope is that even when we are pushed and made uncomfortable by the words of Sweet and Viola that we would draw closer to this Jesus. For he is what it’s all really about!
